You know, I try to be really wary and to not let idealism or irrelevancies seep into my thinking, but I can't help but point out...

...our new president looks damn good, doesn't he? Could he possibly be the most attractive president ever? I suspect as much.

And he's a geek! Our first geek president! I'm so goddamn proud.

Okay. That's enough. He's just a guy, a charismatic man who has had some considerable achievements in his young life and shows promise as president. But he's not without imperfections, I don't agree with him on everything and he is most certainly fallible and subject to my diligent and (hopefully) nonpartisan scrutiny.

He's still just a man...a pretty, pretty man.

...I must remain strong.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is awesome. Nova is awesome. Pluto, not so much. Apparently.

I love that man. He can solve a Rubik's cube. Fuck knows I can't get the last for corners. He's my hero.

Also, rent this movie: CJ7. Don't watch the dubbed version.

Peace on Earth now that sounds nice
But why one month of Paradise?
Whose Peace will we all enjoy,
whose heav'nly host will we employ?

Peace for whom? Wealth for none.
I think misery is much more fun.
The human climb on wasted backs
overcoming holidays, death and tax.

So join with me and let's all cheer
No Peace, not this month, not this year.

Dec. 6th, 2008 @ 01:27 pm I just found this poem I wrote a couple months ago on a Chinese class handout.
Like unrequited love but in reverse.
Like unrequited love but much much worse.
If you're falling out then you will find
Gravity's a circle and you're blind,
So with pen in hand you write pretentious verse.
Have I mentioned it's like love but much much worse?

If you could sink
sink down
down to the bottom
with me
with me with you
with me
we would never
be lonely
If our flesh was
space-time
let the fishies feast
feast forever
Until the space
the space between
the space between the stars
stink like us.

But me, with me, the sky
and me
if I twist the sky
if I
if I lay blue on blue
on blue
I'll rest on blue
and I
I would stand
then I
I could stand up
on my own.

Oct. 24th, 2008 @ 12:19 pm Proposition 8....Prop-o-Ganda?
Hey, so, every once in a while I get these e-mails from No on Prop 8 because I signed a petition ("just for our records, no, we won't e-mail you anything"...yeah, right). Today I got a rather disturbing one and I'm wondering if anyone call tell me if this claim is true or not.

Yesterday, donors and supporters of Equality California began receiving threatening letters for their support of the statewide organizations efforts to protect LGBT youth and seniors from the "Yes on 8" campaign leadership. These letters threatened to "expose" the donors listed on Equality California's website if they don't donate to the "Yes on 8" campaign and refrain from supporting LGBT equality in the future.

The letter, sent on their campaign letterhead, was signed by four members of the group's executive committee and suggests our donors withdraw their support for their own good. It demands an equivalent donation or else:

"Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. You would leave us no other reasonable assumption. The names of any companies...that choose not to donate...to ProtectMarriage.com...will be published.

...We will contact you shortly to discuss your contribution."

This outrageous attempt to raise money by using threats reveals their true agenda: permanently to harm the LGBT community, our organizations, our allies and our supporters. Donate now and send a message to the other side -- We reject your effort to intimidate us, and we reject your shameful lies. We will fight to protect our freedom.

So can anyone confirm this?

Oct. 7th, 2008 @ 07:45 pm Debate II
You know how some sequels try to rehash the original, only more inanely?

Yeah...

Christ, I was waiting for one of them to kick the other in the shins and call them a poopie.

And what's up with ignoring the big red lights? What're they, colorblind?

I can summarize the debate thusly:

Obama, time's up. Obama, time's up. Shut up. Shut up already. Obama, just shut up.
McCain, it's not polite to throw mud indoors. Besides, that's Rove mud, you don't know where that's been.
Both: You know what would be neat? A debate where the candidates actually answered the questions.

Okay. This pointless political post brought to you by Righteous Indignation™, now available in liquid form.

This brings up an interesting point about criticizing those who opposed the surge. It was anything but an instant success and the "Awakening" is the true catalyst for success. The question is, did the surge facilitate the Awakening? My completely uneducated and irrelevant opinion is that putting more boots on the ground, though it strained our resources even further, is a good idea when everything is out of control (as opposed to hopeless). However, throwing bodies at a problem isn't a strategy I appreciate (see Mao's strategy for success in the Korean War).

I'm actually still torn, though I still think the idea of a surge made sense.

I don't think we'll ever really know.

Oct. 6th, 2008 @ 05:33 pm Just a note....
...about my post regarding McCain suspending his campaign.

I still can't really get my head around it, but I do know one thing.

I was wrong. Very wrong.

Also, it irritates the hell out of me that McCain made a big deal out of suspending his campaign and setting aside all of his time for the economic crisis when...

...all he could really do for the bill is vote for it, since he's not on the financial committee.
...he made a big deal about Obama "phoning it in" when Obama was there just about as much as he was.
...he didn't really suspend his campaign.
...it is highly likely that he never intended to suspend his campaign in the first place. His whole point was that the financial crisis had to be contained NOW so he had to drop everything and go. But McCain has been in the game long enough to know that it takes more than a few days to suspend a campaign. He wasn't taking a gamble and he didn't sacrifice anything... well, except what remains of his evident integrity.

To be fair, though, Obama isn't stickin' to the truth as much these days.

I miss having respect for McCain. I really truly do. Hell, it'd be great to see him in a lawn chair yelling at kids to get off the White house lawn.

ARRRRRGGH! Why is my candidate turning into a dick!? First he retardedly compares McCain to Limbaugh, and now this.

I have a terrible feeling this is going to backfire. Mainly because I think what John McCain is doing is admirable... and what Obama is doing is arrogant.

:::weeps for Obama catching McCain's integrity degeneration disease:::

sPAM? Thoughts?

NOTE: Okay, I know neither are on the Senate's Financial Committee. They're still senators, however, and it seems like they take very little time to actually do the job their constituencies hired them to do.

This is interesting.

From Sciencedebate2008.com:

"Science Debate 2008 worked with the leading organizations listed to craft the top 14 questions the [presidential] candidates should answer.  These questions are broad enough to allow for wide variations in response, but they are specific enough to help guide the discussion toward many of the largest and most important unresolved challenges currently facing the United States."

Ouch!
Sep. 13th, 2008 @ 04:17 pm So many things to show you.
It has been a good time for YouTube and Wikipedia for me. Also, politifact.org and FactCheck.org are tasty.

This election really has me challenging my "liberal elitist" tendencies. Irony aside, I am extremely concerned about my own biases and I want to make sure that emotional hotbutton issues and buzzwords do not dictate my political choices. Furthermore, it is not enough (for me) to simply dislike a candidate based on a few soundbites and rumors. It does a disservice to the causes I support to presumptively brush aside anyone or anything that does not immediately appear to integrate with my worldview. It not only does a disservice to me as a citizen, but to my fellow citizens and to my country.

That being said, I'm really irritated with how Palin is being represented in the media )

And I really suggest you do read about her. And John McCain. And your side too. If you must pick a side, know more that your opponent does. It's the best strategy as far as I can ascertain.

SO...

However, she has said that she supports abstinence only education, she has been deliberately misleading on her position on earmarks and she's really unclear about the causes of global warming.  )

The short story to all this: Palin is being treated unfairly and not given due credit for what credentials she has. However, I think serious question should be raised about if her experience in an isolated, homogeneous area has really prepared her for president or, more importantly, are her policies going to be of benefit to this country should she need to assume the presidency?

I'd also like to point out that Obama's lack of experience has concerned me from the beginning, so I really don't feel there is a double standard here. I was very reluctant to consider Obama as a viable candidate in the beginning of the primaries (although I did have a lot of respect for him based on his 2004 keynote speech and a few other things I had heard about him). However, Obama's integrity and CLEAR POLICIES won me over. (Yes, the caps were necessary, dammit, because anyone who says that Obama offers nothing but empty words or that he's too vague or that he's never outlined his platform is clearly not paying attention.)

So, to inform yourself, go:

to Senator McCain's website
to Governer Palin's website
to Senator Obama's website
to Sentor Biden's website
to the DNC's website
to the RNC's website

And, for your soul: 'Call to Renewal' Keynote Address
Obama's senatorial website has transcripts of all his speeches.

I'm thinkin' about takin' myself out on a date. You know, really romancing myself. Nice dinner, walk on the beach.

Bowling, maybe.

Then I could go back to my place since I'll just "happen to be close by why don't we go up and brew some nice hot...coffee". Maybe I'd put a good tape in my bitchin' boombox. You know, to set the mood. Dare to Be Stupid is a pretty slick album. I could show myself my sweet collection of mugs. I'm sure I'd be impressed. Then we... I mean, I could sit with myself in the chair and talk. I hope I would be really interested in what I had to say, instead of just waiting to fool around. But, realistically, I'd probably get too fresh and have to slap myself.

A whole evening wasted.

Will the ship meet me
Will I meet the Horizon
As the Curve dips down
will I find myself
Go far away
to find myself
Come back around
just to find myself
Home
am I drifting
If I open the sails
and fly straight
Am I drifting
If I sink do I
Acorn Sunlight Tree
or if I sink back
If I could see the mast
am I returning
Straight line Curving
But if I saw a mast
Over the horizon
my mast or a strange
Ship's last gaps
is it returning or
Is it sinking
Nestled on the
crow's nest
will I know
Am I returning
or am I sinking
through the horizon
and should I
Feel sad?
